Jive4All

Back to Activities

Jive4All is a charity teaching modern jive - a fun, easy to learn partner dance. Beginners are welcome to start any week and there's no need to bring a partner. They don't define dance roles by gender, so anyone can learn to lead or follow.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • Dancing can improve physical health by increasing strength, stamina and endurance, as well as improving balance, co-ordination and flexibility;
  • Dancing can have benefits for mental health including increasing self-esteem, lowering anxiety levels, and lifting mood;
  • Gender-neutral dance breaks down traditional gender stereotypes associated with dance, creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or expression.

What to expect

Jive4All is for anyone over the age of 18 who would like to dance to upbeat popular music, regardless of previous experience, identity or perceived 'ability'. It is especially suitable for absolute beginners. If you think you can't dance they invite you to come along so they can prove you wrong!

There is a weekly dance night every Monday evening at Brown’s Field Community Centre. It starts with a beginners class at 7.45pm, followed by a practice session and then a freestyle social dance session. There is detailed information on the Jive4All website about the timings and what to expect.

If you are going along for the first time they recommend arriving by 7.30pm to give yourself plenty of time to get settled before class. When you arrive you will be greeted by friendly volunteers on the door and asked to sign up as a member, verify you are 18 or over, and agree to their safe spaces policy.

You don't need to bring a dance partner - everyone rotates partners during the class so that no one gets left out and you get to dance with lots of different people. During the social dance part of the evening everyone dances with each other. Don’t be afraid to ask people to dance and show them what you’ve learned! Jive4All pride themselves on being a friendly and inclusive group of dancers who welcome everyone and remember that everyone was a beginner once.
