Active with Parkinson's (AWP)

Back to Activities

Active with Parkinson's (AWP) runs a variety of weekly exercise classes South of Cambridge specifically for those with Parkinson's Disease. The classes are delivered in a welcoming, fun and supportive environment. There are standing and seated classes available.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • Exercise can be extremely beneficial in helping to manage Parkinson’s Disease symptoms and slow down their progression;
  • You can meet new people experiencing similar challenges and become part of a supportive community.
  • There are different class types, to suit the needs of people at different stages of their Parkinson's journey;

“The social interaction has been useful and the classes are fun. I’ve learnt more about possible physical symptoms and the ways to counteract them.”

What to expect

The classes are run by Paul Goddard, a Neurological Rehabilitation Therapist with many years’ experience working with clients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other neurological conditions. There are three different types of classes. An overview is given below. For more information, including class times, days, venues and costs visit their website.

PD Challenger
This is a tailored exercise programme that works on mind and body co-ordination. It was designed by Paul to specifically address the challenges that life with PD presents. It is aimed at people recently diagnosed or in the early stages of PD. Four weekly classes are held at Shelford Rugby Club, at different levels of intensity. Each class lasts an hour.

Seated class
The seated class is aimed at people with more advanced PD and/or mobility issues. The class is tailored to the needs of the attendees, meaning that each week’s activities will depend on who comes and how they are feeling. Classes sometimes include cognitive exercises, and strength and stretch exercises with weights, bands and balls. The class is held every Tuesday at Shelford Rugby Club and lasts for 45 minutes.

Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking is a low-impact outdoor exercise which can help improve or maintain balance and co-ordination. The class focuses on the correct gait to improve walking, stride length, co-ordination and balance. The class is held on Fridays in the grounds of the Jubilee Pavilion in Stapleford. If the weather is bad Paul will lead an indoor exercise class in the Pavilion instead.
