Chesterton Garden Club

Back to Activities

Chesterton Garden Club is a sociable and informative group for anyone with an interest in all things green. They offer topical and specialist talks, garden visits, plant sales and friendship. Everyone is welcome to join, whether you're an expert or a complete beginner.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • It’s a great way to meet other people with similar interests;
  • Growing and gardening can take your mind away from life’s troubles and help sleep and mood;
  • Spending time outdoors in nature is invigorating and has proven benefits for mental health.

“I love coming to the club meetings. In the winter we get to hear from wonderful speakers and in the summer we go on so many excellent visits – to gardens of course! Everyone is really friendly and I like the feeling of belonging. And we sell plants to raise money to give to a local wellbeing charity.”

What to expect

Chesterton Garden Club meets in Cambridge and has around 60 members. They are a very friendly and welcoming group and welcome everyone, whether you have a thing for courgettes or cacti, or you just want to get your boots muddy!

From September to April the Club hosts meetings on occasional Thursday evenings at St Laurence’s Church Hall on Milton Road. Meetings include illustrated talks or demonstrations by invited speakers, topical tips, gardening questions and table competitions. There is plenty of parking at the venue and there are also bus stops nearby. The venue has toilets and is wheelchair friendly.

In the summer months the Club organises a programme of visits to gardens of interest in Cambridge and further afield. Some members also open their gardens and host plant sales. You need to book your place in advance for these summer outings using the booking form on the Chesterton Garden Club website. For trips outside Cambridge the Club organises car shares.

For details of all upcoming events, and links to the booking form, visit their website.
