What to expect

Scottish Country Dancing is traditional social dancing to upbeat Celtic music. You dance with a different partner for each dance, in groups with other couples called 'sets'. The dances are all different and are taught and practised before being danced to music, giving people the opportunity to learn the sequences of steps, called 'figures', which are repeated in various combinations. By the end of an evening you can feel that you've had a good workout!

Weekly combined beginners/intermediate classes are held on Tuesday evenings in term time at Newnham Croft Primary School. The first part of the sessions is split into two groups: 'Essential Skills' and 'Consolidating Skills'. Beginners are very welcome to join the Essential Skills class. The second part of the evening brings everyone together for social dancing.

Weekly advanced classes are held on Wednesday evenings at Wesley Methodist Church, run by the Cambridge University Strathspey & Reel Club (open to both students and members of the public).

Family Ceilidh's (social gatherings with Scottish folk music and dancing) are held in Saint Andrews Centre in Histon on Saturdays roughly once per month. You don't need any previous experience because you will be guided through the steps by a 'caller'.

The RSCDS Cambridge and District branch occasionally run structured beginners courses where you can learn the basic formations and steps.

Who can join the classes?
Everyone is welcome to join - no previous dance experience, partner or Scottish connection is needed! The RSCDS Cambridge and District branch is primarily a society of adult dancers. However people under the age of 18 are welcome to join events and classes (those under 16 should be accompanied by a responsible adult).

Who can join the family ceilidhs?
Family groups of all sizes are welcome at the family ceilidhs. All children must attend with a responsible adult, and all adults should attend with at least one child.

What should I wear / bring?
For all classes and events you should wear flat shoes and clothes you can move in easily, and bring a bottle of water.

Can I bring a formal / informal carer or support person with me?
Carers or supporters are welcome to participate with no extra charge.

What is RSCDS?
RSCDS Cambridge and District branch is a branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society which has branches all over the world. All teachers have to undergo training from the RSCDS before they can teach a group.
