Spilling the Beans Writing Group

What to expect

The group meets fortnightly at the Devonshire Arms on Monday evenings, 7.30 - 9pm.

The sessions are run by Lisa, an experienced writer and facilitator (wearing a stripy top in the photos above). Lisa leads the group through different writing exercises by giving prompts, as inspiration, and encouraging the group to write for a certain number of minutes. You are always welcome to change the prompt if you prefer, it is just there as a starting point.

At the end of the timer, there is then the opportunity to share what you have written with the group, but there is never any pressure to do this. You can just listen if you prefer. Members only ever give constructive feedback on each other’s work, and try to focus on positives and encouragement.

The group is made up of people with a range of ages, some of the members are neurodiverse. The group is very LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming and inclusive of all lifestyles and cultures. Around 3-4 people currently attend each of the sessions.

There is a WhatsApp group where Lisa shares the prompts each week, so members who missed the session can do the exercises at home if they like. You can choose to be added to the WhatsApp group after attending your first session.

When you come along to a session in person for the first time, Lisa will welcome you and introduce you to the rest of the group.

The Devonshire Arms is an accessible pub. There are toilets available. There is parking available a short walk away at Gwydir Street car park; parking is free after 6pm.

The Spilling the Beans Writing Group is free to attend.
