Volunteer at Burnside Community Allotment

Back to Activities

Burnside Community Allotment is an outside space for growing food and community, located in the Romsey area of Cambridge. New volunteers are always welcome.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • It takes place in a beautiful, peaceful outdoor environment;
  • It enables people to come together to grow and share food;
  • It is a place to share skills.

"Into the garden I go, to lose my mind and find my soul"

What to expect

Burnside Community Allotment runs two allotment pitches on the Burnside site of the Burnside & Vinery Allotment Society. The two pitches are run solely for the use of the community. They run open sessions for individual volunteers, as well as group sessions for community organisations.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer at the open sessions. You do not need any previous gardening experience. You will be given an opportunity to contact another volunteer before you come if you are feeling nervous, and you are also welcome to bring someone with you to the session if you like. The sessions last 2 hours but you can attend for less time if you prefer.

To find out more, including the dates and times of upcoming volunteering sessions, email bcallotment@outlook.com.

More information

The venue is an allotment garden so the terrain is uneven and most of the beds are at ground level. Clothes and footwear should be appropriate for gardening, and volunteers should bring their own refreshments. Sessions will be cancelled in bad weather. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times. There is parking and a toilet onsite.

All produce is grown to be shared amongst all the volunteers, guided by the maxim "from each according to their ability to each according to their need". The allotment's values include the absence of hierarchy, inclusivity, respect, equality, social justice, empathy and fostering happiness. They strive to be wildlife-friendly and avoid the use of pesticides and other products that damage the environment.

The organisers are keen to collaborate with local community groups and organisations whose members / beneficiaries are on low incomes or are otherwise marginalised and who would benefit from gardening. If you know a group that may be interested contact bcallotment@outlook.com.
