Yoga for Health

Back to Activities

Yoga for Health classes are run by Cambridge City Council's Active Lifestyles Team. They are friendly, welcoming sessions where you will be guided through breathing exercises, simple meditation, and a sequence of different poses to improve your strength and flexibility.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • Practising yoga can help build your physical strength, flexibility and coordination;
  • Practising yoga can help to balance the nervous system – helping you to rest, recharge, breathe and connect;
  • You can meet new people in a friendly, supportive environment.

“I had never done yoga before but was keen to try something new in the hope of calming my mind and finding my exercise mojo again! The change since starting the class has been immense. My mood is greatly improved and the class is now an important part of my weekly routine. The teacher is great. She creates a really calm and positive atmosphere.” (Quote from a female attendee in her 50s.)

What to expect

Yoga for Health classes are suitable for beginners and those with some previous yoga experience. To take part in the classes you will be required to get on and off the floor. You can complete the classes either barefoot or in socks. For hygiene reasons it is recommended that you bring your own yoga mat.

During the sessions the instructor will guide you through a series of movements, poses, breathing techniques and strength exercises. For some poses they will offer different options that you can try depending on your level of flexibility. You are welcome to take a break to rest at any point during the class.

You should wear something comfortable that you can easily move around in. You should bring a bottle of water and any emergency medications with you i.e. asthma inhalers, GTN sprays, dextrose tablets (as required).
