Bat and Chat

Back to Activities

Bat and Chat sessions are run by the Active Lifestyles Team at Cambridge City Council. Drop in for a fun, informal game of table tennis, badminton or pickleball followed by a chat over a cuppa. No previous experience needed and all equipment is provided.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • It’s a great way to get some exercise in a friendly, social environment;
  • You can meet new people in your local area;
  • You can have fun and learn new skills.

“I hadn’t played ping pong since I was 12 years old, I’m 68 now and I love it! I like the general atmosphere, nobody takes themselves too seriously… it’s made me a bit healthier and I lose weight… I look forward to it every week”

What to expect

There is a weekly Bat and Chat session at Cherry Hinton Village Centre which is open to anyone aged 18 or over. There is also a weekly session at Meadows Community Centre in Arbury which is open to people aged 50+. You can find information about dates and timings on the Cambridge City Council website.

The first hour of each session is spent playing informal games of table tennis, badminton or pickleball. Sometimes boccia and indoor curling may be available too. The last half an hour of each session is for socialising over tea and coffee.

The sessions are facilitated by Fred from Cambridge City Council. When you come along for the first time Fred will introduce you to other members of the group, and provide guidance on how to play if required. The emphasis is on having fun, not around competition!

For more information and the link to book a session visit the Cambridge City Council website.
