Cambridge Cyrenians Allotment Project is a therapeutic community garden for people with experience of homelessness. It's a supportive space to connect with nature and others, build skills, and improve wellbeing outdoors.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- it can reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing for people with experience of homelessness;
- it can strengthen connection to nature and the environment;
- it provides an opportunity to grow, cook and eat fresh food.

What to expect
The Cambridge Cyrenians Allotment Project runs twice-weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am - 1pm. It is run by Kevin Walshe, Allotment Coordinator. Attendees can stay for the whole session or leave at any time. You can find out more about Cambridge Cyrenians on this page.
Who can take part in the project?
The project is open to people living in Cambridge Cyrenians accommodation, other local people using homelessness services and anyone who has experienced homelessness in the past. You do not have to have prior experience of gardening, running an allotment or horticulture - the project will help you to develop these skills!
What happens during sessions?
The allotment provides more than gardening. Participants can access horticulture training, supported work experience and a positive social environment where everyone is treated with respect. The space includes vegetable-growing areas, wildlife habitats, and shared social spaces that encourage connection, learning and creativity. Sessions are kept small, with around 6–8 participants, to ensure a safe and supportive environment. A no-alcohol policy applies on site, and participants must be able to use tools safely. All staff and volunteers are DBS checked.
What can I expect the first time I attend?
Kevin, the Allotment Coordinator, will meet you at the Whitehill Allotment site, and guide you down to the Cambridge Cyrenians plot. He'll be sure to introduce you to the rest of the group, and help with any concerns and answer questions. You are welcome to contact Kevin in advance if you have any questions, concerns or requests.

What is the allotment like?
The allotment is based at Whitehill Allotment Society off Elfleda Road in Cambridge. It has the following areas:
- Vegetable plots for growing fresh produce
- A wildlife area with ponds and a small orchard
- A forest skills zone with a fire pit
- Wildflower plots and a beekeeping area
- A large social space known as The Old Barn
- Tool sheds, a polytunnel and bike storage
- A creative, beach-themed show garden
- Solar panels and composting toilets
- The Wildlife Trusts 'Wildlife Gardening Award' winner for a wildlife and nature-friendly space.
What should I wear / bring? Can I bring my dog?
Comfortable clothing and footwear recommended. There is shelter available from the rain. Dogs are welcome at the allotment.
Can I bring a carer or support person along?
Yes - they are welcome to come along and participate, or there is seating if they would like to sit and watch. There is no cost for them to attend.
